One-of-a-Kind Design and Customization Create the Buzz in Designer Jewelry

These types of pieces are outweighing status-driven and trend-focused purchases for many in the new generation of jewelry enthusiasts – those who care less about name brands or what’s currently in vogue, and more about the imagination and craftsmanship behind each piece. They may have their core wardrobe of jewelry and are now looking to expand with pieces that start a conversation or immediately strike a responsive chord that says, “this is the one.” After all, jewelry is an enduring relationship.
Therefore, pieces that align with personal beliefs, memories, and goals — those that touch the wearer deeply or incorporate stones from inherited styles, reimagined to reflect individual taste — have gained significant traction and continue to evolve as the new definition of luxury in jewelry. We spoke to a group of NouvelleBox’s designers to get a peek into their one-of-kind and custom businesses:
“When I launched my collection, it was with the intention of giving new life to timeless pieces — reinventing them for the modern collector,” says Mindi Mond. “These designs always spark curiosity in retail settings; clients are drawn in by their past lives and are compelled to learn the stories behind them. This approach has created real momentum for us. Retail partners tell us these pieces consistently draw attention and conversation. For us, it has opened the door to a more intimate, intentional way of connecting with clients.”
“These earrings began as a circa 1920s jabot pin, which I reinterpreted into a sleek, modern silhouette. A personal love for Art Deco design continues to influence many of our collections, and this pair is no exception. They are designed with removable diamond studs for everyday wear and a dramatic drop for evening,” says Mond.
“Customers today are seeking emotional connection and authenticity in what they wear. There is a growing appreciation for craftsmanship and artisanal techniques, especially those with historical or cultural depth,” says Francesca Neriserner, one of the owner-designers of Rome’s Le Sibille. “One-of-a-kind and custom pieces allow us to build more intimate relationships with our clients as they become part of the creative process, which enhances brand loyalty.”
She continues, “Retailers are increasingly drawn to our pieces because they help differentiate their offering in a saturated market. This shift has encouraged us to expand our bespoke services and to highlight more visibly the heritage, symbolism, and manual artistry behind each creation.”
"Each jewel tells a story of cultural heritage, sacred symbols, and contemporary identity — all through the ancient art of Roman micro mosaic. The one-of-a-kind ring features a micro mosaic interpretation of the iconic dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica — a tribute to the extraordinary skill of Rome’s mosaic masters. Entirely handmade in Le Sibille’s atelier in Rome, it embodies the spiritual and architectural symbolism of the Eternal City,” Neriserner explains.
“Ever since I began designing 25 years ago, I have created one-of-a-kind, limited edition and customized pieces. As a bench jeweler—it’s the way I’ve always worked—there are no two pieces that ever come out exactly the same; each South Sea or Tahitian pearl, colored stones and the antique diamonds I use are very different. And then there is the addition of the delicate, garden-inspired 18K gold pieces I add to create jewelry that has a bit of whimsy and magic, and that, I have found, puts a smile on my customer’s face,” Lene Vibe explains.
“For me, it is much more fun and challenging to always be surprised at how a piece comes out when it is finished. As I have evolved, I noticed that both retailers and direct clients don’t care about the name brands as much as they do about the integrity of the pieces. And, I have gained more clients who are asking for even more customization. They give me a sense of a direction, but trust me to add different elements that spring from my imagination and, when finished, become part of their persona, which is so gratifying for me.”
“Bespoke is an increasingly large proportion of my business which I really enjoy. It’s an important way of extending my practice, particularly when a client is willing to go on a discovery journey with me, experimenting with new techniques and approaches,” says Alice Cicolini. “One of the marketing consultants for Bottega Veneta said to me ‘today’s real luxury is meeting the designer who created the work you love.’ I believe that more people are beginning to feel that this is true. New clients are connecting with me as they seek meaning—often bringing heirloom stones and gold—or starting with an inspirational story.” She continues, “Jewelry is talismanic; I believe that the energy in a piece comes from the people who made it, the designer (me) and the master craftsmen. This energy, powerful as it is, is then handed on and transformed by the wearer who is deeply involved in the process.”
“The highly personalized aspect of fine jewelry and the artisanal nature of the product has always been a draw for customers, but now due to the price of gold, fine jewelry is much more of an investment,” Lizzie Mandler explains. “As a result, many clients are being more considerate with their purchases, looking for pieces that really resonate and feel exclusive. We love working with clients on customization. This latest collection, Love Knots, has many heavier gold pieces with plenty of surface area to add hand engraving and can be customized with birthstones or other meaningful stones for clients.”
“The Kaleidoscope Shaker™ concept allows for many creative possibilities, which leads to clients finding individual expression through our jewelry,” says Moritz Glik. “It’s a rewarding process that pushes us beyond our comfort zone and inspires innovation that differs from our core collections. Creative challenges are what drive and fulfill our work.”
“For some time now, consumers have been gravitating toward pieces with which they can identify what feels meaningful to them. This has evolved into one-of-a-kind and custom designs. It reflects a deeper desire for emotional connection. This shift has pushed me to lean even more into storytelling and creating tailored experiences for my clients,” explains Joy Haugaard, who along with her sister Sarah owns Lionheart.
“I choose to integrate old pieces into new designs because many of us have heirloom jewelry received on special occasions—pieces that may not match today's style and often end up forgotten in a jewelry box,” says Creative Director Raluca Leafu. “These reinterpreted pieces carry more than just intrinsic value; they hold emotional value that, in the end, provides the most meaning.”
