Whether a ring, bracelet or earrings, the magic of creating Joule Project happens with each piece handcrafted by bench jewellers in the brand’s atelier, right in the beating heart of Bucharest.  The mission of Joule Project is to support local artisans blending century-old techniques with contemporary design and precious stones.

Raluca Leafu, Joule Project’s creative director, who founded the brand in 2020, is intrigued by all expressions of energy — hence the name. She delights in how it connects people and sparks emotion. For her, energy is the inspiration, whether created through human actions and reactions or the raw geothermal power emanating from the mantle of the Earth.

Indeed, the brand’s inimitable aesthetic contrasts precious metals such as 14-carat gold with 925 sterling silver and uses waxed carved techniques to channel and echo the seismic cracks, fault lines and rock fissures that fracture the Earth’s crust. The tactile nature of the jewellery enhances the wearer’s experience of the senses.

Mixed metals and cracked surfaces aren’t the only Joule Project signatures. Each ring is crafted with a secret stone embedded on the ring’s interior, which instantly identifies it with a special mark of authenticity, adding an intimate connection with the wearer.

All pieces are presented in a special case, crafted by hand in the atelier, inspired by rough-hewn rocks shaped by the Earth.

Joule Project launched with the diamond mine pavé ring which has become both iconic and the brand’s bestseller. This head-turning ring combines 14-carat yellow gold with 925 sterling silver silver. Carefully carved to depict the concentric curves so redolent of an open-cast mine, it comes scattered with the bounty of excavation in the form of 80 sparkling, white diamonds.

Today, this unisex collection has expanded to include not just rubies, sapphires, and emeralds but also alexandrite, with its capacity to display nature’s magic trick by changing colour. In every case each gemstone is hand cut to align with the design. As well as the main collection, special bespoke pieces can be commissioned at the brand’s atelier. The collection also sells at Aparterre, Bucharest’s foremost concept store.

“We celebrate nature and capture its energy in precious forms,” says Leafu. “Every piece we craft is a personal promise — to be strong like stones, to grow through every crack, personally empowered, while shining bright and brilliant throughout.” This bit turns the original copy into a quote which makes it more impactful.
